Fun & Funny Microbrand Watches

Some watches are built to disappear under a stiff cuff. This group? They are not those watches. The Atlas’ “Fun” tag collects a herd of these makers, willing to make the hobby a little less solemn and serious. Whether it’s through color, visual jokes, swear words, or literally penguins copulating... these are pieces that clearly weren’t approved by a committee. Mr Jones Watches, Studio Underd0g, FUTURE FUNK, Brew, Klokers, Sō Labs and plenty of others live somewhere in this neighborhood or neighborhoods adjacent.

A funny watch doesn't have to be a novelty watch
There is a difference between a throwaway gag and a genuinely good watch that happens to have a sense of humor. Some brands here make serious mechanical watches with unserious dials. Others use color, typography, animation or unconventional ways of telling time to make the object itself more playful. The point is personality, not a rubber chicken strapped to your wrist.
Microbrands have more room to get weird
Big watch companies usually need a design to work for a very large audience. Small independents can survive on the opposite idea: make something specific enough that a smaller group absolutely loves it. That makes microbrands unusually fertile ground for funny, colorful and oddball watches — the sort of pieces that can turn a collection from “very tasteful” into “actually memorable.”
